It is always a privilege to collaborate with young choirs that stand out for their energy, dedication, and artistic excellence, such as the UIC College Prep Choir. Under direction of Jaqueline Larry, this ensemble has cultivated an identity grounded in mutual trust, respect, and a strong sense of community—values that are clearly reflected in their musical work.

This piece was composed as part of the Cantaré project in Chicago, Illinois, an initiative supported by VocalEssence in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that seeks to promote Mexican culture through the creation and performance of works by Mexican composers for choirs at various educational levels, from elementary schools to university ensembles.

During the creative process, Jaqueline told me about one of her students, Anthony Wright, who possessed a remarkable talent for creative writing. Following that conversation, I invited him to write a text that could resonate with the choir members and reflect experiences meaningful to them. The result was Joy, a poem that encourages us to find strength and hope even in the midst of hardship. Through images of light, friendship, and renewal, the text reminds us that joy is not merely a fleeting emotion, but an inner force capable of sustaining us through our darkest moments and helping us move forward with confidence and optimism.

Musically, the language of gospel seemed the ideal vehicle for conveying this message. Its expressive power, communal spirit, and ability to find light in the face of adversity perfectly reflect the essence of the text.

Although the work was conceived several years earlier, circumstances resulting from the pandemic prevented its premiere from taking place as originally planned. Joy was ultimately premiered in 2024 by VocalEssence Singers of This Age in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Bajo la dirección de Jaqueline Larry, este ensamble ha construido una identidad basada en la confianza mutua, el respeto y el sentido de comunidad, valores que se perciben claramente en su trabajo musical.

Esta obra fue compuesta en el marco del proyecto Cantaré, en Chicago, IL.
